What essentially was a 14-year pilot program shows that when kids of all incomes get healthy breakfasts and lunches for free at school, it’s a win-win for everyone. Kids get healthier and make better grades. Local school officials are relieved of the administrative burden. Parents benefit because they are relieved of the financial burden and the logistical and emotional burden of getting breakfast and lunch together. Prices at the local grocery store drop because the source of food for schoolchildren shifts from the retail market (the local grocery store) to the wholesale market, thus pushing prices down at the local market. And, it is cheap for the federal government, costing about $50 billion a year in a $20 trillion budget. So what’s the holdup? Republicans.
