There is very little difference between the book burnings carried out by Germany’s Nazis and the book bannings being promoted by American arch-conservatives, but such bannings are rapidly increasing all across America. Librarians are the first line of defense against the practice, but they need help, and independent publishers, informal advocacy networks, tight-knit social groups and book lovers everywhere all have parts to play.
