Even though food is a basic human necessity, the greed of corporations involved with its production and distribution has turned food into a commodity from which they squeeze as much profit as they can. The result is that food prices are much higher than they could and should be, thus forcing many people who cannot afford the prices to go hungry. But, it need not be. A growing new movement that prioritizes community involvement in decision-making is seeking to create a new food system that values equity, sustainability and health above corporate profits. If it succeeds, nutritious food will be available to everyone at affordable prices.
