An estimated 108 billion pounds of produce go to waste every year in the United States, including roughly 42 percent of it that never even makes it out of the field.\u00a0 And yet, the USDA estimates that 13.5 percent of U.S. households are food insecure.\u00a0 But, thanks to a group of Southern California college students who recognized the problem in 2020, food rescue missions are popping up all over the nation that are collecting\u00a0 countless millions of pounds of\u00a0 surplus food from farms and delivering\u00a0 it to food banks.\u00a0 Hungry people are being fed, and the farmers even get a tax break.<\/p>\n
