Plastic pollution is being discovered virtually everywhere, from the poles to the equator, from the bottoms of our oceans to near the top of Mount Everest, from the clouds to mothers’ milk. The problem is worsening exponentially with every passing year, and the results are devastating. Plastic pollution causes cancer, alters the amount of oxygen in our oceans, melts snow and ice, interferes with reproduction, and much, much more. But there is hope. Since 2020, delegates from 175 nations have been working on the world’s first legally binding plastics pollution treaty, and the self-imposed deadline for producing the final draft is December. In this article, marine scientist and plastics pollution expert Imogen Napper discusses the problems and the hope for the effort’s success.
