In 2022, malaria killed 608,000 people around the world, 95 percent of them in Africa and 80 percent of them children under the age of 5. But hope is on the way. A new, relatively cheap malaria vaccine has been sent to several African countries and tens of millions more doses are promised. Officials say 500,000 child deaths could be saved every year.
