In the 1600s and 1700s, San Cristóbal was overrun by cats, rats and goats, all of which outcompeted the slow-moving Galápagos tortoises for food. At the same time, carnivores feasted on their eggs, and the combination caused the population to nosedive. Today, however, with human help, the giant tortoises are making a comeback.
