It is well established that oil and gas companies damage the environment, so shouldn’t they have to pay for cleaning it up? Vermont thinks so, so it has passed a law that requires them to do just that. The law was spurred by the Environmental Protection Agency’s new program that forces the companies to take responsibility for their activities, and although Vermont is the first state to pass such a law it won’t be the last. New York, Massachusetts and Maryland are considering it, and others are sure to follow.
