The shipping industry is responsible for about 3 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, but that could be eliminated if today’s giant cargo ships could be propelled by wind instead of diesel fuel. And that just might be on the horizon. A University of Miami researcher is developing giant cylinders that would be mounted on the decks of cargo ships, generating thrust by sucking in, pressurizing and ejecting air in a different direction.
